Course objective: The goal of the subject is to provide through knowledge in mobile systems based on CDMA and spread spectrum methods, such as Wireless LAN and 3rd generation mobile cellular systems. A part of the curriculum is dedicated to gain a theoretical knowledge in spread spectrum methods, modern coding and modulation schemes and synchronization techniques, which are implemented and used in the modern wireless systems. The subject also gives insights to the architecture of 3rd and 3.5 generation mobile standard - cellular system W-CDMA, description of physical, transport and logical channels and overview in the state of art and newly developed WLAN standards.

Concise plan: Following units are in the subject: A position of the field among other technical disciplines. Basic terminology. History and perspectives, main application areas. Example exercise which shows the need of spectrum spreading in presence of interfering noise and justifies the main advantages of such systems. Correlation and SS systems; State of the art and perspectives of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation mobile systems. Classification of systems, basic advantages and disadvantages of individual systems. Pseudorandom sequences, requirements and their testing;Introduction to systems which use direct sequences, DS/BPSK sender and receiver, possible simplifications to it's design. DS/QPSK systems, a sender and a receiver implementation. Calculation of gains in DS systems;Introduction to frequency hopping systems, differences between systems with slow and fast frequency hopping, the structure of a sender and a receiver, most common implementation using MFSK. Exploitation of diversity; TH, UWB and hybrid systems. Wireless broadband system based on MC-CDMA and 2D MC-CDMA;Synchronization in SS systems, acquisition and tracking in different SS systemsô Interference and strategies for protection against interference, wide band and narrow band interference, CW and RBG interference, BLADES system. Application of SS systems in CDMA, remedy of signal reflections and interference. Applications in navigation and radar systems, GPSô 2,5G and 3G mobile systems. Fundamentals of mobile system and network architecturesô UMTSôApplication of SS systems in WLANs, overview of related IEEE and ETSI standards.
